Strategic Maps

"If you can't explain it
Simply put, you haven't understood it."

Albert Einstein

WHAT IS A STRATEGIC MAP?

A Strategy Map is a visual representation of your strategic model. Through the strategy map you can show the summary of your strategy at a glance.

The use of Strategic Maps entails several benefits:

  • Helps establish and communicate priorities.

  • Facilitates the enunciation of Objectives.

  • It allows you to establish cause-effect relationships, which allow you to communicate the strategic hypothesis of your Organization.

  • Facilitates communication. By facilitating communication, you help with implementation.

What conditions must a well-made strategic map meet?

In truth, the conditions that a strategic map must meet depend on the expectations and requirements of each organization. There are no fixed rules, but rather trends and some best practices. In 25 years of existence of strategic maps, they have had many changes.

An interesting guideline to consider is that the map can become an analog representation of a numerical, digital plan.  A plan has a set of objectives, it has indicators to show the evolution in performance, it has actions to leverage the achievement of the objectives. A strategic map could graphically represent said plan. In this sense, the map will complement a communication process, since the numerical plans point to the left hemisphere, and the visual analogies, to the right hemisphere.

Brain Hemispheres

A Board of Objectives and Indicators (Balanced Scorecard style, or other models) and its strategic map. In many models, both tools complement each other, optimizing strategy communication. We can say that as a team, and well designed, these tools aim to work with both cerebral hemispheres:

  • The left hemisphere, logical, rational, sequential, objective, focused on details, analytical, has more to do with the boards of  traditional indicators.

  • The right hemisphere, intuitive, holistic, subjective, globalizing, centered on the whole, has more to do with the strategic map.
